Map Overlays

Map overlays are reference images placed over the PathLab map. A site manager might use one to show a site plan, a marked-up aerial image, temporary work areas, or landmarks that are easier to recognize visually.

Overlays help people interpret the map. They are separate from features, so robots do not treat the image itself as a route, boundary, or keep-out area.

View overlays

Open Map Overlays under Map Data in the PathLab sidebar. Each row shows the overlay name, original filename, and opacity.

Use the checkbox beside an overlay to show or hide it:

  • If you can edit features, the visibility choice is saved for the fleet.
  • If you have view-only access, the choice applies only to your current browser session.

Add an overlay

  1. Open Map Overlays and select Add Map Overlay.
  2. Choose a PNG, JPEG, or WebP image up to 20 MB.
  3. Enter a clear name that other operators will recognize.
  4. Position the image over the site. Drag its four corner handles on the map, or enter the longitude and latitude for each corner.
  5. Adjust Opacity so both the image and the underlying map remain readable.
  6. Select Upload & Create.

A newly selected image is initially placed near the center of the current map view. Zoom to the area you need before adding the image to make initial placement easier.

Edit or remove an overlay

Select the edit button on an overlay to change its name, corner positions, or opacity. The map previews your changes while the editor is open. Select Save Changes to keep them, or Cancel to leave the saved overlay unchanged.

Select Delete in the editor to remove the overlay and its stored image. This cannot be undone.

Note. Available buttons depend on your fleet permissions. You may be able to view an overlay without being able to add, edit, or delete one.

Good practices

  • Use overlays as visual references only. Create and deploy a feature when a robot must follow or avoid an area.
  • Keep opacity low enough that robot positions, features, and safety zones remain visible.
  • Use descriptive names that include the site area or purpose.
  • Check corner placement at more than one zoom level before relying on the image during operations.
